Once again this year you can celebrate Jefferson’s passion for wine. Held on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at Jefferson’s secluded retreat, Poplar Forest, just 20 minutes from Lynchburg, VA, this festival celebrates Jefferson as the “father of Virginia wine.” Although largely unsuccessful in his day, his vision of great Virginia wines has been realized by wine makers throughout the state.
Showcasing 18 wineries, 13 artisans, 6 local food purveyors, musical entertainment and more, the day is filled with something for everyone. House tours will be available throughout the day at a reduced rate. Tasting tickets include a signature wine glass. You must be 21 years or older to taste wines. Festival will occur rain or shine in heated tents.

It’s that time of year again….when Old City Cemetery, in Lynchburg Virginia, conducts it’s Candlelight Tours. Visit various sites throughout the cemetery where professional actors will portray the lives of several of the cemeteries “residents.” Always interesting, educational, moving and sometimes funny the stories told delight people of all ages. And when else can you walk around a cemetery after dark?
The tours take place on October 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29, 2011 beginning at 6:30pm each evening. The last tour will depart from the visitor center at 7:50pm. Each tour lasts about one hour, travels over uneven ground, cobblestones and walkways so wear good walking shoes and bring along a flashlight.

Then you will want to attend one of the Ghost Walks presented by the Lynchburg Historical Foundation and Tharp Funeral Home. This years event will take place in the historic district, in Lynchburg, VA known as Diamond Hill. On the nights of October 20, 21 & 22, 2011 walking tours will take place about every 30 minutes starting at 6:00pm until 8:30pm. As these walks cover uneven ground and brick and slate sidewalks please wear comfortable walking shoes and perhaps bring along a flashlight.

On Sunday, October 9th we took a break from working at The Carriage House Inn Bed and Breakfast, Lynchburg’s premier bed and breakfast to attend the final session of Thomas Jefferson’s “passion” series at his retreat, Poplar Forest. A brisk but sunny day was the perfect backdrop for a wonderful late afternoon lecture by Richard Goodman, renowned author. He spoke of and enlighted a full house about the time when Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Adams were living in New York while working to put democracy into practice. Can’t you just imagine the discussions, disagreements, suggestions and conversations these distinguished gentlemen participated in? How might we use their knowledge and foresight to assist us with today’s problems?
The series of three lectures were educational, insirational and enjoyed by all who attended. The Carriage House Inn Bed and Breakfast, Lynchburg, VA introduces it’s signature recipe, pumpkin waffles, for the month of October. November and December are also great months to use pumpkins. What would Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner be without pumpkin pie. In the spirit of fall, colored leaves, pumpkins and warm spices this dish is always a crowd favorite. Once you’ve enjoyed these fabulous waffles you too may request them upon your return visit, even if it’s not October!
Pumpkin Waffle Ingredients:
- 1 cup cake flour
- 1/4 cup wheat germ
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup half and half
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1/4 cup oil
- 1 large egg
- 2 large egg whites
Apples & Spiced Maple Syrup
- 2-3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- dash of nutmeg
- 2 crisp apples, Granny Smith, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
Preheat oven to 200 degrees.
Waffles: Preheat Belgian waffle iron to medium heat, according to manufacturer’s directions. In a large bowl, whisk flour, wheat germ, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, spices and salt. In a separate bowl, beat together half and half, pumpkin puree, melted butter, oil and egg.
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients. Whisk together lightly to make a slightly lumpy batter. Allow to rest for 30 minutes. In a third bowl beat the two egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Gently fold egg whites into batter mixture.
Pour and spread about 1 cup batter into the center of the waffle iron. Cover and cook until crisp on both sides and a rich golden brown. Keep warm, on oven rack only, in a 200 degree oven until ready to serve. Repeat with remaining batter. Serve garnished with hot apples and spiced maple syrup.
Apples and Spiced Maple Syrup
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat; add spices. Add apples and let cook until warm but still crisp, about 2-3 minutes. Add pure maple syrup. Toss to coat. Keep warm until ready to serve atop waffles.
