The Academy of Music, as it was originally known as, first opened its doors on February 1, 1905.  Approximately 800 people attended the grand opening, which included the musical comedy “The Show Girl.”  Those who attended were reasonably affluent, as the tickets cost $10 a seat, or $280 today!

The theater closed its doors in 1958.  In the early 2000s, a restoration effort started.  Local community leaders, philanthropists, business owners, and concerned citizens banded together and committed to restoring this historic, cultural icon in downtown Lynchburg.  In December 2018 the theater came alive once again, as part of the Academy Center of the Arts.  Various performances, theatrical and choral events are scheduled throughout the year.  Visit their website www.academycenter.org for a calendar of upcoming events.

The Academy, as the locals call it, is located just blocks from The Carriage House Inn Bed and Breakfast and all the wonderful downtown restaurants so you can leave your car here and enjoy a great dinner, fantastic show and get a little exercise as a bonus.
