In downtown Lynchburg, VA, at 1118 Main Street, you will find Kegney Brothers Pub. In the style of a true public house, in Ireland, the interior of Kegney Brothers, the menu and the drink selections hark back to the original Kegney Brothers Saloon which opened in 1879 at 405 12th Street.
The pub exudes charm, comfort and good times. The interior space is constructed from reclaimed architectural salvage material. Edison-style pendant lights and bulbs evoke an old timey feel. Old photographs, handed down by family members, show the original saloon location, pictures of saloon patrons, the original liquor license, a Kegney whiskey label. A showcase contains family heirlooms from the original pub.
Kegney Brothers offers pub seating, a comfortable dining room or a patio overlooking the James River. The menu includes classic pub fare, including dishes from Ireland and England like fish and chips, bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie and corned beef and cabbage. An express lunch menu is available between 11 until 2 which offers burgers, sandwiches, salads and soups along with the standards. The pub and dining menu is available Monday through Sunday between 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM. An after hours menu is offered after 10:00 PM until closing.
The pub serves a variety of Irish whiskeys, Highland single malt scotches, American bourbons and whiskeys along with a long list of drafts, bottles and canned beer from Virginia, the United States and the U.K.
Between the hours of 4:00-6:00 PM, Monday through Friday, special food and drink offerings are highlighted during happy hour. Talented local musicians are hosted regularly throughout the year especially on weekend evenings (see the live music and events tab on their web site).

Located in the William King, Jr. Tobacco Warehouse, built in 1896, Shoemaker’s American Grille is consistently winning dining awards as voted by people who dine there, both locals and visitors to Lynchburg. The King Building was used for storing dried and drying tobacco by the Imperial Tobacco Company. The 6 story building was constructed of handmade brick fired here in Virginia and named for the manager of Imperial Tobacco.
Throughout the restaurant you will find the original industrial feel of the building: exposed wood beam ceilings, brick and stone interior and exterior walls, nine-foot tall windows. Shoe themed dining rooms and matching décor line the walls.
Shoemaker’s menu is upscale with a variety of appetizers, salads, entrees and specialty dishes. We especially enjoy their Crispy Fried Calamari, the Warm Spinach Salad, the ever tender Filet Mignon (almost always ordered by Mike) and their Crab Stuffed Trout served with asparagus risotto. You can’t go wrong when ordering their Chocolate Blackout Cake or Crème Brulee or a dessert martini at the end of your meal. Shoemaker’s American Grille has the most extensive wine list, of any restaurant we’ve found, in Lynchburg. Containing a large selection of American wines plus wines from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Italy, Spain, Argentina and Chile. If you prefer Cognac, Single Malt Scotch or Tequila the spirits menu is complete. Happy Hour, at the bar, takes place Monday through Friday between 4:30 until 6:30. Special prices on at least a dozen appetizer plates are offered, plus on wine, beer and mixed cocktails.
Do you need a private room for a gathering? Shoemaker’s has four private rooms, each with a unique seating capability. Choose from the Loafer (seats up to 12), the Oxford (seats up to 16) or the Wingtip (seats up to 40).

Food trucks are a part of American life and can be found in every major city, over the past several years we have started to see more and more of them in Lynchburg. Typically they are scattered around the downtown area but on Food Truck Thursdays they all head to Miller Park (in front of the old Miller School at 301 Grove Street if you need an address for your GPS). Food Truck Thursday was the brain child of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department and has been a great success. The day we visited we took a blanket and after buying our lunch we had a picnic under one of several dozens huge oak trees. There is also a covered shelter with picnic tables if you prefer to eat at a table.
I was pleasantly surprised at the crowd of people gathered to support these mobile restaurateurs. Many were in suits while others in scrubs and then there were the casually dressed diners such as myself.
If you are looking for an affordable meal and a wide variety of food options then you won’t want to miss Food Truck Thursdays at Miller Park. They are there from 11:00 to 3:00. This is the perfect spot for your lunch break, for a picnic (where you don’t have to prepare the food) or a place to bring a date.
These are the same food trucks you find on the streets of Lynchburg, but on Thursdays you don’t need to check their Facebook pages to find them. Miller park is only about 10 minutes from the downtown area. You will want to check this out several times as the food trucks in Lynchburg take turns as to who is there on Food Truck Thursdays so go there often to be able to sample all the different vendors.
Wouldn’t you like to start your long, 4th of July weekend early? Then start it by having lunch on Thursday, the 2nd, at Miller Park. We hope to see you at Food Truck Thursdays! If you are heading to Lynchburg and need a place to stay, The Carriage House Inn Bed and Breakfast is the place to stay. Check out our availability and book your reservations here.
Do you love grilled cheese? Did your mom make a special grilled cheese for you? Do you accompany your grilled cheese with a bowl of soup, probably tomato? Then you want to try the food from the Cheesy Rider Food Truck.
Cheesy Rider serves gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and homemade soup, plus an assortment of chips, drinks and brownies.
Taking the classic grilled cheese and elevating it with creative, but delicious, filling combinations the Cheesy Rider Food Truck is off and running! There’s more to a great grilled cheese than just cheese and bread. The perfect combination of a gooey, meltable cheese and the perfect bread, that is not too thick and doughy, are the key ingredients at the Cheesy Rider.
Sandwiches are named after historical areas in downtown Lynchburg. Their most popular item is the Garland Hill, which was inspired by turning spinach-artichoke dip into a grilled cheese sandwich. The Tinbridge Hill features cheddar, cranberry and chipotle peppers. The Diamond Hill consists of brie with fig jam and Jarlsberg. For those who like a bit of spice, try the Federal Hill, which comes with wing sauce.
Currently the only soup offered is a chunky tomato, but isn’t that the one we normally pair our grilled cheese with? Cheesy Rider is hoping to add a cold, smoky gazpacho this summer and they are tweaking their version of French onion.
Look for the blue, white and yellow food truck at the Community Market on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday between 11 until 2. On Thursday the join Lynchburg’s other food trucks at Miller Park between 11 until 3. Prices range between $6.00 to $8.50 for a grilled cheese.
We will see you there!
